A Memorial

Maggie’s Corner is located at the corner of Highway 51 and Hickory Flat Road in Banks County. Named in memory of Maggie Jones Bruce, the owner’s mother, the event center is a welcoming and warm venue to host any event, much like the property’s namesake.

Known as Ms. Maggie, Maggie was a school teacher in her early years and left that profession to become a full-time mom to five daughters, all of whom were raised on the land upon which Maggie’s Corner sits today. A gentle and kind-spirited lady, Maggie beautifully expressed her creativity in crocheting doilies, drawing, writing, and in crafting floral arrangements, generally from wildflowers and grasses foraged from the surrounding property. She also had a “green thumb”, adorning her porch with planters containing a variety of flowers, prospering under her care, and in her later years, was known to have coaxed a lovely hydrangea to majestic proportions.

She loved keeping her finger on the pulse of the community, and journaled a column in the local newspaper for many years, entitled “Looking Out from Poplar Springs”, the local name for the community where Maggie’s Corner is located.

Once her daughters had all reached school age, she returned to the teaching profession, doing occasional substitute work in one or more of the local school districts. She had fond memories to tell of her teaching years, some of which drew laughter, some of which drew tears of compassion.

In her later years, she taught piano lessons to many area residents. It is not unusual for locals passing by Maggie’s Corner to drop in and say, “I remember and loved your mama.”, or “Your mother taught me piano lessons.”

Her signature was not complete without the addition of the Bible verse, Romans 1:16, which is now part of the Maggie’s Corner logo. From the courtyard foliage – to the daylily field – to the hidden scripture verses written by friends and family during construction, Maggie’s Corner is a memorial to Ms. Maggie, and while she now abides with her heavenly father, her sweet spirit is evident in much that is Maggie’s Corner today.
